Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.
Thank you so much, Anon! ;) All glory to God!
I admit I’ve been wondering the same thing myself for a while. These are some of the methods the Father has put on my heart, but I definitely encourage you to ask around some other Christian blogs, any church members, or close Christian friends.
One of the major ways to keep your fire for God is to speak with Him on a constant basis. God is our Father, our Master, our Husband, but He’s also our Friend. (John 15:15: Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of My Father I have made known unto you.) What better way to stay connected to a friend than to speak with them often? Something that I’ve been getting used to is talking with God all the time, on a moment-by-moment basis. This is also called prayer. Of course, this doesn’t mean every second you’re saying something to God, but definitely keep yourself in a “mindset of prayer.” This means, whenever something happens that you want to discuss with Him, you can just go ahead and say it! Prayer doesn’t have to be said on your knees, with your face bowed. You don’t have to be formal, or pleading. Prayer means you are speaking with God, and you can pray anywhere and at any time. When you pray to God, you speak with Him as if He’s in flesh form right beside you. Praying to God entails everyday, normal conversations about any and everything at any time. You can talk about heavy problems that are weighing on your heart or you can just speak about a new TV show you’re enjoying. Anything you want. He is your Friend and He’s never too busy to listen. Best thing is, He’ll talk back! It won’t be a physical response, but it will come to your spirit. It’s important to stay connected to God by simply talking to Him about anything, not just your problems, but your greatest joys, your sorrows, your thoughts, ideas, etc. in any place at any time.
Another way to keep the fire burning is to stay dependent. (John 15:5: I am the Vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in Me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without Me ye can do nothing.) Know that you cannot and will never be able to live out the Christian life without Jesus working through you. Truly, Jesus is living the Christian life for you and through you. Letting Him take the lead in your life and allowing Him to soothe your soul when you fall down will get you much closer to Him. It will also energize you to stay connected to Him.
One special thing to remember is: satan is always on the lookout. Remember, he’s a prowling lion looking for someone to devour. (1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:) He loves to take advantage of our weaknesses and he will try extremely hard to keep us from staying on fire for God. satan will use several techniques to quench your zeal including: ignorance, sin, and negative thoughts. If you aren’t constantly reading up on God’s Word, you will be without the knowledge to remain on the straight and narrow. However, please know that God will keep His hand on you. He will bring certain things to your attention when you forget them and He will walk with you. Depend on Him, and stay engulfed in the Word. (Joshua 1:8This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.)
When it comes to sin, satan is always there to tempt us. If we continue to sin, our consciousness will become hardened to sin and our zeal will fade. Stay prayed up and ask for God’s Holy Spirit to keep you sealed in His perfect will.
Last but not least, satan will use negative thoughts to douse your fire. Low self-esteem and doubt are two of his most powerful tools. satan loves to use comparison to make us feel bad about ourselves. He loves pointing out zealous Christians and saying, “you don’t do nearly as much as Angela over there. Might as well give it up now. You have no place in the Kingdom of God. You’re actually a disappointment to Him. Can’t you just picture Him shaking His head?”
Also when it comes to negative thoughts, satan loves bringing up your past sins. Whatever they may be, satan loves using them. However, Paul gives us some wonderful Scripture to heal us and block our hearts from satan’s flaming arrows. The verse is Philippians 3:13-14: Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before. I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. God has cleansed you from the past. The only thing it’s good for is learning from.
satan also loves using doubt. He loves trying to get you to doubt your prayers, yourself, and, God. He’ll try to damper your prayers and tell you, “do you really believe God will make it happen? It never worked all the other times you prayed. Actually, your prayers never really work, do they?”
Keep all negative thoughts away from you (Proverbs 23:7: “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.”) and ask God to harden your heart against sin. One website words it excellently: “Close your mind to all that [is] evil in the sight of God and you will always win.”
Lastly, I would suggest that you keep God forever before you. Surrender yourself to His will and He will always be apparent in your life and in your day. When a wonderful piece of Christian advice comes to me, I pray for God to keep it in my mind and bring it to me whenever I need it. God never fails to help me when it comes to this. He helps me to live the Christian life by His strength.
Preach the gospel with every breath. To do this, you don’t physically have to quote Scriptures, but do everything in love. God’s Holy Spirit will do this through you as well.
In a nutshell: pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17), speak to God all the time about anything, even if it’s just about the sneakers you like to wear or the great experience you had at the grocery store, stay dependent and desperate for Him, open your heart for His words, His teaching, and His guidance, and refuse negative thoughts, doubts, and sins whenever satan brings them to you. Remember that God will ALWAYS come to the rescue (1 Corinthians 10:13: There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.).
God will be forever by your side. He will be the one to keep your spirtual fire burning. He will fill you with His Holy Spirit and that will guide you wherever He wants you to go. Never give up, and know that He is with you as your strength, your sword, and your shield, no matter the situation.
God bless you.
If we do what we do to glorify God we won’t be afraid of what people think because we’re not doing it to receive praise from men, but to give honor to our Father.

James 5:14-16 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
If something is truly of God, He will bring it to pass.
